The Gurmani Centre’s dedicated team of language faculty teach courses in Urdu, Persian, Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, and Arabic. They have also developed innovative methods and resources to teach these courses.  The language team is led by Dr.Gwendolyn Sarah Kirk.


Language Pedagogy Co-ordinator

Gwendolyn S. Kirk holds a doctorate in Linguistic Anthropology from The University of Texas at Austin. She teaches courses in Comparative Literature, Linguistic Anthropology, and Cinema Studies at the Mushtaq Ahmed Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Since 2019, she has also headed the Gurmani Centre’s Language Program as Language Pedagogy Coordinator—bringing her expertise to develop curricular materials and teaching techniques to enhance the program. She has also been working as Development Director for the Languages@LUMS  project, overseeing development of digital materials for the teaching of Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Sindhi, and Urdu.


Persian Language and Literature Instructor

Fatima Fayyaz is Assistant Professor of Persian Language and Literature at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS. She holds a Ph.D in Persian Literature from the University of Tehran. Dr. Fayyaz’s interest in Persian Literature began during her undergraduate years, when she was inspired to delve further into Persian Poetry after discovering the verses of Bedil Dehalvi. She has since researched Persian literature from various countries and across genres. Her dissertation centered around Central Asian Sufi literature, focusing particularly on the Khubravia order. More recently, in 2019, she published an article titled “Contemporary Afghan Women Poets: A Feminist and Analytical Study” in Bunyad. Her research interests include the poetry of Agha Hashar Kashmiri, Persian influences in Urdu literature, the Shahnameh, and Iranian Literary Culture. 


Pashto Language and Literature Instructor

Imad Khan is Visiting Assistant Professor of Pashto language and literature at LUMS. He is a native speaker of Pashto and holds an M.A. in English Literature and Linguistics from National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad. He was selected by IEE Fulbright program for Pashto Language Teaching Assistant position at Penn Language Center, University of Pennsylvania. He also studied Modern Teaching Methodologies and Modern American Literature during his time at the University.  He is currently working on translating Pashto short stories into English for a collection titled Darzan Afsani. His research interests include Digital Pedagogy, Material Development, and Comparative Literature.



Sindhi Language and Literature Instructor

Ashok Kumar Khatri is Visiting Professor of Sindhi Language and Literature at LUMS.  He holds an M.Phil. in Sindhi Language and Literature from Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad. He also heads the Institute of Languages and Linguistics at Oriental College Punjab University, Lahore and teaches Sindhi Language at the institute. He has worked as a translator and linguist with various educational and governmental organizations on projects for the advancement of the Sindhi language. Currently he is working on compiling the New Comprehensive Sindhi Dictionary with the Center for Language and Engineering. He is also a member of the Urdu Science Board and the Punjab Text Book Board. Ashok Kumar Khatri’s previous publications include multiple Oxford Teacher’s Guides for teaching Sindhi at the Secondary School level. He is currently working on a Sindhi translation of Albert Einstein’s autobiography.


Arabic Language and Literature Instructor

Abdul Qadeer is Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the School of Humanities and Sciences, LUMS. He holds a post doctorate in Arabic and Comparative Literature from SOAS, London. He also remained a gold medalist at Punjab University—where he attained his masters and doctorate in Arabic Literature. He has presented his research at conferences in several Arabic speaking countries including Egypt, Algeria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. His work has been published in various international and local journals including Fikr-o-Nazar, Al−Dirasat Al−Islamiyyah, Majalla-e-Tehqiq, and Oriental College Magazine.
